Chicago Abortion Fund 

Title: Support Coordinator

Supervised by: Program Manager

Status: Full-time, exempt, salaried

Compensation Range: a starting rate of $68,980 per year

The compensation package has:

  • 401K with 5% employer match

  • Unlimited paid time off, mandatory four weeks off; paid parental leave; federally observed holidays

  • 100% employer-paid health insurance premiums, including dental and vision, with 50% coverage for dependents, abortion care coverage in the event abortion care is not covered at time of service

Work Environment:

The physical demands are representative of those an employee encounters while performing essential functions of this job:

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends

  • Illinois residence is required and candidates must be available for in-person regular meetings in Chicago, up to twice weekly.

  • In-person or hybrid working options currently. Must be able to participate in online virtual communications including email, video conferencing, and other online tools used to facilitate virtual office culture and work sharing. 

  • A full-time work week at CAF is defined as 32-36 hours. This may change in the future.

  • The employee’s schedule is set by the supervisor. It is set for several months at a time, and includes four, 8-hour work days a week, Monday-Saturday. Shifts are between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM, with the rare evening meeting or event.

  • Support Coordinators are expected to work Saturdays, on a rotating basis. Hours and shifts may need to adapt due to changing abortion needs and service demands.

  • Must be able to conduct business in English; however, fluency in languages other than English is a plus. Spanish speaking pay differential available for qualified candidates.

  • Some work at off-site locations may be required; CAF aims for accessibility in any off-site location that we have control of, but some of them may not be fully accessible.

  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and scanners. Employees are regularly required to communicate effectively via computer, via phone, and in person.

  • This role requires frequent sitting. 

Overview

The Support Coordinator supports the helpline program at the Chicago Abortion Fund (CAF) by providing financial, logistical, and compassionate support to people seeking abortion care in Chicago, Illinois, and the greater Midwest. The Support Coordinator works individually and as part of a team with CAF’s staff and volunteer case managers to advance reproductive justice in Chicago, Illinois, and the Midwest.

Key Responsibilities

Helpline Support (about 70%)

Lead Support 

  • Serve as “Lead Support Coordinator”: manage, triage, and delegate work to other Support Coordinators the incoming calls and wrap-around support requests 

  • Fulfill wrap-around support requests in a timely manner 

  • When serving as Lead, monitor CAF helpline email and encrypted clinic and other abortion fund channels; will also function as “Back Up” monitoring email and encrypted communication channels as requested by Lead

  • Make independent strategic decisions to ensure those needing our services get the care they deserve in a sometimes difficult and faced-paced environment where immediacy is required.

Helpline Support

  • Complete intake, working alongside CAF callers to determine and provide critical and immediate financial, logistical, travel, and emotional support

  • Provide individualized case management to identify financial and logistical needs to access care; collaborate with CAF staff, case managers, and/or those needing our support, often in communication and partnership with clinics, other abortion funds, and allied organizations

  • Utilize critical thinking and strategic questioning skills to assess and appropriately respond to grantees and support requests

  • Provide direct support to case managers, interns, and/or staff

  • Collaborate with and represent CAF to other abortion funds, clinics, and reproductive justice, rights, and health organizations with integrity and care

  • Create and modify helpline program resources to support staff and case managers

  • Confidently and effectively support those needing our services

  • Demonstrate accountability and responsibility in work that is completed and tasks that are assigned in a timely manner

  • Support recruitment and training of volunteer case managers

Administration (about 20%)

  • Enter and update data in grantee database in an organized and timely manner

  • Manage administration for case management including regular documentation, tracking case closure rate, and reporting grantee feedback

  • Monitor program budget, track expenditures/transactions, and support related financial administration for case management

  • Ensure implementation of CAF policies and practices, including but not limited to data protection and confidentiality

  • Perform duties required of all staff to support smooth internal operations.

Other (about 10%)

  • Actively participate in required convenings, summits, retreats, and staff meetings, and participate in required staff communications

  • Participate in reproductive justice movement-building initiatives such as coalition meetings, rallies, lobby days, and community partner events as appropriate

  • Update professional knowledge by participating in educational opportunities approved by CAF, maintaining networks, and participating in professional organizations as relevant to your role

  • Support related programmatic activities as needed

  • May be involved in other cross-department work including but not limited to supporting development, finance, and communications

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to reproductive justice and abortion access for all people

  • Knowledge of intersectionality and the impact that privilege and oppression can have on people’s ability to access abortion

Experience and Skills

  • A minimum of two years of continuous work experience in case management, customer service, social services, call center or related work

  • Working knowledge of the abortion access crisis we are currently navigating

  • Demonstrate broad experience with Google docs and Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Power Point)

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; strong critical thinking skills.

  • Previous experience with project management or task management software 

  • Experience managing confidential information

  • Experience maintaining accurate records 

  • Previous experience, or the ability to quickly learn, gathering and analyzing statistical data and generating reports

  • Experience in assisting people with receiving services with compassion, kindness, and empathy
